Rights Group Urges Urgent Response as Sokoto Attack Leaves Seven Dead, 17 Abducted
Amnesty International has called for an immediate investigation into a deadly attack on three communities in Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State, where seven people were killed and more than 17 others reportedly abducted.

The attack occurred on Wednesday, August 19, in Dinawa, Munki and Gidan Dare communities. Amnesty said 15 of those taken away were women and girls, highlighting the heightened risks faced by vulnerable residents in rural communities affected by banditry.
The rights organisation warned that repeated attacks have forced residents to abandon their homes and farms, particularly in parts of eastern and southern Sokoto. It said the violence was disrupting livelihoods and leaving communities increasingly dependent on security and humanitarian support.
Amnesty urged federal and Sokoto State authorities to strengthen the protection of rural communities, investigate the latest killings and abductions, and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. The organisation said the recurring attacks demonstrate the urgent need for a more effective security response to protect residents whose lives and livelihoods remain under threat.
