US, Canada Miss Trade Deadline as Tariff Threats Persist

The United States and Canada have failed to reach a new trade agreement that could have eased the threat of higher US tariffs on Canadian goods, leaving businesses on both sides of the border facing continued uncertainty.

US, Canada Miss Trade Deadline as Tariff Threats Persist

The development came despite earlier indications from US President Donald Trump that Washington and Ottawa could reach an agreement, with trade negotiations remaining focused on the tariffs imposed on some Canadian products and the broader terms governing commerce between the two neighbouring economies.

The stalled talks put fresh pressure on Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government to secure favourable access to the US market while protecting Canadian industries from the impact of additional tariffs. Canada is heavily integrated with the US economy, making changes to cross-border trade particularly significant for manufacturers, exporters and other businesses.

For Washington, the negotiations form part of Trump’s broader push to reshape US trade relationships and secure terms he considers more favourable to American businesses. With no deal reached, uncertainty over the future of US-Canada trade is likely to continue as both governments weigh their next steps.
