Trump Becomes First Living U.S. President to Appear on a Circulating Coin
The United States has released a new $1 coin bearing the portrait of President Donald Trump, making him the first living U.S. president to appear on a circulating U.S. coin in about a century.
The coin, issued by the U.S. Mint to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, features Trump’s portrait on the front, alongside the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “1776–2026.” The reverse carries the Presidential Seal and the number 250.
The U.S. Mint says the coin is being released into circulation and is also available for collectors in rolls and bags.
The move breaks with a long-standing American tradition against depicting living people on U.S. currency. The last sitting president to appear on a U.S. coin was Calvin Coolidge, whose portrait featured on a commemorative half-dollar in 1926.
The Trump coin has already generated controversy, with critics questioning the decision to place the sitting president’s image on government-issued money and raising concerns over the political symbolism of the move.
The administration and supporters, however, point to legislation authorising a special dollar coin for the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.
The coin is therefore not part of the regular Presidential Dollar series, but a special 2026 issue created to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States.
For Trump, the coin represents another highly visible addition to his public legacy — putting the sitting president’s image directly into American currency.
