Trump Expresses Hope for Stronger U.S.–China Ties During Summit with Xi

U.S. President Donald Trump has said he hopes relations between the United States and China will grow stronger, as he continues high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Trump Expresses Hope for Stronger U.S.–China Ties During Summit with Xi

Speaking during the ongoing summit, Trump emphasized the importance of cooperation between the world’s two largest economies, expressing optimism about improving diplomatic and economic ties despite longstanding tensions.

The meeting comes amid complex relations between Washington and Beijing, shaped by trade disputes, technology competition, and geopolitical rivalries. Both sides have, however, signaled interest in maintaining dialogue to avoid further escalation.

Analysts say the tone of the talks suggests a measured attempt to stabilise relations, particularly as global markets remain sensitive to developments between the two powers.

While no major agreements have been announced so far, the summit is expected to address key issues including trade, investment, and strategic cooperation.

For global economies—including many in Africa—the outcome of U.S.–China relations remains critical, given their influence on international trade flows, supply chains, and investment patterns.
