Trump TV Launches as Major US Networks Halt White House Coverage
The White House has launched a 24-hour digital streaming channel called “Trump TV: The Essentials Station”, as major US television networks suspend their shared coverage of President Donald Trump’s official events amid a growing dispute over press access.
The channel went live on Monday through the White House’s official YouTube account and website. It features selected speeches, announcements, past appearances and other administration footage, which the White House says will be updated around the clock.
The launch followed the administration’s decision to bar CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House. The three organisations have sued the administration, arguing that their exclusion over their reporting violates constitutional protections for the press.
In response, ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News and NBC suspended the presidential television pool, a system in which the networks rotate responsibility for filming presidential events and share the footage with other broadcasters.
The networks said the public has an interest in receiving independent information about the government and that no administration should restrict a news organisation because it objects to its reporting.
The dispute meant that some presidential events, including Trump’s trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, went ahead without the usual live television pool coverage.
The White House, meanwhile, has promoted Trump TV as an alternative source of video from the administration. The channel is not a conventional independent television network but a government-produced digital stream featuring material selected by the White House.
The legal battle over media access is now before a federal court, with the outcome potentially affecting how news organisations covering the White House access presidential events.
