Trump’s Post on Pope Sparks Global Backlash
Global reactions have continued to pour in after United States President Donald Trump publicly criticised Pope Leo XIV and shared an AI-generated image portraying himself as Jesus, a move that has drawn sharp condemnation from world leaders and religious voices.

Leaders across Europe and the Middle East shifted the conversation away from politics and focused on what they described as a dangerous line being crossed. Their concern was not just about disagreement with the Pope, but about the tone, symbolism, and the growing normalisation of disrespect toward religious figures.
Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, strongly rejected the remarks, stressing that the Pope’s role is to promote peace, especially in a time when global conflicts continue to rise. She emphasised that calling for an end to war should not attract ridicule or hostility.
From Iran, President Masoud Pezeshkian also condemned the development, framing it as an insult not only to the Pope but to religious values more broadly. Iranian officials reinforced this position by highlighting the importance of protecting voices that advocate peace in a world already weighed down by violence and conflict.
In Poland, even allies of Trump expressed discomfort. A top security official aligned with the Polish presidency described the social media post and accompanying image as crossing accepted boundaries and disrespecting the global Catholic community.
At the centre of the controversy is Pope Leo XIV’s consistent stance against war and his criticism of certain foreign and immigration policies. Rather than respond directly to the attacks, the Pope maintained his position, making it clear that his message is rooted in faith and moral responsibility, not politics. He signaled that he would continue to speak on issues of peace without engaging in personal disputes.
