Ukraine Challenges Decision to Reinstate Russia’s Olympic Status

Ukraine’s National Olympic Committee has taken legal action against the International Olympic Committee’s decision to restore the Russian Olympic Committee’s participation in global sporting events. The appeal, filed with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, follows the IOC’s move earlier in July 2026 to lift the suspension imposed on Russia in 2023 after its invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine Challenges Decision to Reinstate Russia’s Olympic Status

The Ukrainian Olympic body maintains that the reinstatement was made prematurely, arguing that the conditions that led to the initial ban have not been adequately addressed. It contends that the decision overlooks previous rulings, including a 2024 judgment by the Court of Arbitration for Sport which upheld the suspension on the grounds that Russia had incorporated sports organisations from occupied Ukrainian territories, thereby breaching Olympic regulations and Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

Ukraine further warns that allowing Russia to return to full Olympic participation without resolving these concerns could weaken the enforcement of international sports laws and set an undesirable precedent within the Olympic movement. The outcome of the appeal is expected to determine whether Russia’s reinstated status will stand ahead of upcoming international competitions, including the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
