Court Hears New Details in Fatal Crash Involving Anthony Joshua’s Team
A Nigerian court has heard new details surrounding the road crash that killed two members of British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua’s team, with the driver accused of causing the collision pleading not guilty.
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, is facing charges including causing death by dangerous driving and driving without a valid national driving licence. He denies the allegations.
Inspector Christopher Ajayi Taiwo of the Ogun State Motor Traffic Division told the court that Kayode was attempting to overtake a moving truck when he lost control of the Lexus SUV and collided with a stationary lorry.
Joshua, who was travelling with his team, survived the December 2025 crash, but his personal trainer Latif Ayodele and strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami were killed. The court heard that the passengers were asleep when the collision occurred.
The police investigator said that by the time officers arrived, both vehicles had been removed from the scene. Investigators recovered wreckage, spilled soya beans, a vehicle logbook, painkillers and an energy drink around the crash site.
The court also heard that Joshua has not yet provided a statement to investigators, with the police witness saying efforts to obtain one were ongoing.
The driver of the stationary lorry, Abubakar Adamu, 35, is facing a separate charge of obstructing the free flow of traffic. He has also denied the allegation.
The trial has been adjourned until September 10, 2026, as proceedings continue to determine the circumstances and responsibility for the fatal collision.
