ECOWAS Court Adopts Digital Case System to Modernise Justice Delivery
The ECOWAS Community Court of Justice has introduced an Electronic Case Management System (ECMS) in a move aimed at modernising judicial processes and improving access to justice across West Africa.

The digital platform, launched in Abuja, enables electronic filing of cases, real-time tracking of proceedings, virtual hearings, and automated case management, reducing reliance on traditional paper-based systems.
Court officials say the system is expected to enhance efficiency, cut litigation costs, and improve transparency for individuals and legal practitioners across the region’s 15 member states. It also supports multiple languages, reflecting the Court’s diverse operational environment.
The initiative forms part of a broader institutional reform strategy designed to address long-standing challenges associated with manual processes, including delays, administrative bottlenecks, and limited accessibility for cross-border litigants.
To ensure effective implementation, the Court has conducted training programmes for legal practitioners and staff, with expectations that most users will transition to the platform in the near term.
Authorities say the rollout of the ECMS marks a significant step toward establishing a fully paperless judicial system by 2030, while strengthening the Court’s role in promoting accountability, efficiency, and regional integration.
