EU Pushes for Greater Women’s Participation in Nigeria’s 2027 Elections

The European Union has called for increased participation of women in Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, urging stakeholders to address barriers limiting female representation in politics.

EU Pushes for Greater Women’s Participation in Nigeria’s 2027 Elections

EU officials emphasized the need for inclusive electoral processes, noting that women remain underrepresented in Nigeria’s political landscape despite constituting nearly half of the population. They called for reforms that promote equal opportunities, including support for female candidates, improved access to campaign financing, and stronger legal protections.

The appeal is part of broader efforts by international partners to strengthen democratic institutions and ensure more representative governance in Nigeria.

Analysts say boosting women’s participation could enhance policy outcomes and deepen democratic legitimacy, but challenges such as cultural norms, political violence, and funding constraints continue to hinder progress.

The EU reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s electoral system through technical assistance and advocacy ahead of the 2027 polls.
