Federal Government Destroys Over 2,800 Illegal Weapons to Strengthen Security Efforts
The Federal Government has destroyed more than 2,800 illicit and decommissioned small arms and light weapons as part of ongoing efforts to curb insecurity and reduce the circulation of illegal firearms across the country. The exercise took place at the Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment in Giri, Abuja, under the supervision of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW).
Officials said the latest action brings the total number of recovered and destroyed weapons to nearly 19,000, reflecting sustained attempts to eliminate tools commonly linked to terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes. Authorities emphasized that the destruction process is intended to permanently remove these weapons from use, ensuring they cannot re-enter circulation.
The NCCSALW noted that thousands of illicit and obsolete firearms have been recovered since its establishment under the 2024 Act, with contributions from multiple security agencies, including the police, military, and intelligence services. The Nigeria Police Force was identified as a major contributor, having provided a significant number of seized weapons.
Security officials described the destruction exercise as a critical component of a broader national strategy that includes law enforcement operations, intelligence gathering, border control, and community-based interventions. They also stressed that transparent disposal of recovered arms is essential to prevent them from being diverted back into criminal networks.
The government reiterated its commitment to tracking and eliminating illegal weapons while warning traffickers and manufacturers that such arms will eventually be recovered and destroyed. Citizens were also encouraged to support security efforts by reporting suspicious activities related to the possession or movement of illicit firearms.
