Ghana, Nigeria Suffer Defeats as Egypt, Morocco and Senegal Win AFCON Qualifiers
West African giants Ghana and Nigeria suffered defeats in the second round of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on Tuesday, while Egypt, Morocco and Senegal recorded victories in their respective matches.
Ghana suffered a major setback at home, surrendering a 2-0 lead to lose 4-2 to The Gambia in Accra. The result leaves the Black Stars without a point from their opening two Group C matches after they also lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire in the first round.
Nigeria were also beaten 3-0 by Guinea-Bissau. Franculino opened the scoring before Mahamadou Balde doubled the hosts’ advantage, with Alvaro Djalo adding a third in stoppage time. Despite the defeat, Nigeria remain second in Group L with three points, while Guinea-Bissau moved top with six.
Elsewhere, Egypt thrashed South Sudan 5-0, while Morocco defeated Lesotho 2-0. Senegal also secured a 1-0 away win over Ethiopia.
The 2027 AFCON finals will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, with the qualifying campaign running through March 2027.
