Government Approves Financial Support Package for Returnees After Xenophobic Attacks
The Delta State Government has announced a financial and welfare package for indigenes recently evacuated from South Africa following xenophobic violence.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori approved a grant of ₦2 million for each affected family, alongside monthly stipends aimed at supporting the reintegration of the returnees into society. Under the arrangement, individual beneficiaries are to receive ₦200,000 monthly, while families will be paid ₦300,000 from August 2026 until May 29, 2027.
The governor, represented by his Chief of Staff, Johnson Erijo, disclosed the measures during a reception held for the returnees at the Government House in Asaba. He described the attacks as a serious violation of human rights and expressed concern over the physical, emotional, and economic impact on the victims.
He also acknowledged the role of the Federal Government in facilitating the evacuation of affected Nigerians, noting that swift intervention helped ensure their safe return.
As part of the rehabilitation efforts, the state government will provide free medical examinations for all returnees at public health facilities. In addition, the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Services has been tasked with offering counselling and psychosocial support to help victims recover from trauma.
The governor called on residents of the state to welcome the returnees with empathy and solidarity, assuring them that efforts were being made to help them rebuild their lives. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of citizens and promoting opportunities for economic stability.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Special Duties, Ejiro Etacherure, said the government had taken steps to properly document and support each returnee, adding that the initiative reflects a coordinated effort between state and federal authorities.
