Nigeria’s Women’s Basketball League Set to Tip Off August 16
Nigeria’s top women’s domestic basketball competition is scheduled to begin on August 16, as the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) prepares to launch another season of its women’s premier league.
The competition, commonly known as the NBBF/Zenith Bank Women’s Premier League, is Nigeria’s leading domestic women’s club basketball competition and provides a major platform for developing elite female players for national and international competitions.
The league forms an important part of the NBBF’s 2026 domestic programme. The federation’s season calendar places strong emphasis on strengthening domestic competitions and developing players as Nigeria continues to build on the success of its national women’s team, D’Tigress.
The women’s league also serves as an important pathway for identifying players who can progress to Nigeria’s national teams and represent the country in continental competitions. Its leading clubs compete for the opportunity to represent Nigeria in African club basketball competitions.
Nigeria remains one of Africa’s leading women’s basketball nations, with D’Tigress having established themselves as a dominant force on the continent. The development of a competitive domestic league is considered crucial to maintaining that pipeline of talent.
The NBBF has continued to structure its domestic competitions around multiple phases, with teams progressing through conference or league stages before the decisive playoff and final phases. The federation’s 2026 Premier League regulations state that the competition will culminate in a Playoffs/Final Four phase.
The league’s return is expected to attract renewed attention from basketball supporters, sponsors and scouts looking for emerging Nigerian talent.
With Nigeria preparing for major international women’s basketball commitments later in the year, the domestic competition is also expected to provide valuable opportunities for players to gain competitive experience and stake their claim for national-team selection.
The reported August 16 start date should, however, be regarded as provisional until the NBBF formally publishes the complete fixture and venue schedule.
