Nigeria Resumes Onion Exports to Ghana After Fresh Trade Dispute

Nigeria’s onion trade with Ghana is set to resume following renewed engagements aimed at resolving a dispute that had disrupted the movement of onion consignments between the two West African countries.

Nigeria Resumes Onion Exports to Ghana After Fresh Trade Dispute

The National Onion Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NOPPMAN) lifted its suspension on onion exports to Ghana with immediate effect, according to the latest announcement by the association.

The decision follows weeks of tension over the treatment of Nigerian onion traders and the movement of their consignments into Ghana. NOPPMAN had earlier called for intervention from both governments and ECOWAS after efforts to resolve the dispute failed.

The latest development follows a dispute that had previously led NOPPMAN to halt exports to Ghana.

In April, the association accused traders in Ghana of harassment, intimidation and the seizure of Nigerian onion-laden trucks, particularly around Kotoku Market in Accra, a major distribution point for onions entering Ghana from Nigeria. PUNCH reported at the time that the dispute had disrupted cross-border supply and raised concerns about regional food distribution.

Reports indicated that 15 Nigerian trucks carrying onions were seized at Kotoku during the earlier dispute. The disagreement centred partly on competing trader groups and the distribution of Nigerian onions in the Ghanaian market.

The April dispute was temporarily resolved following diplomatic intervention involving Nigerian and Ghanaian officials, allowing trade to resume after a five-day suspension. However, the underlying disagreements were not completely settled.

The dispute resurfaced in August, prompting NOPPMAN to again suspend onion exports and seek ECOWAS intervention.

On August 10, NOPPMAN President Aliyu Maitasamu said exporters had exhausted available avenues for resolving the disagreement and would keep shipments suspended until Nigeria and Ghana reached an acceptable agreement on the rules governing the trade.

The latest decision to lift the suspension therefore represents another attempt to restore normal trade while negotiations continue.

Ghana is an important regional market for Nigerian onions, making the dispute significant beyond individual traders.

Onions are a major component of food trade across West Africa, and disruptions along the Nigeria-Ghana corridor can affect farmers, transporters, wholesalers and consumers on both sides of the border.

The dispute also highlights the difficulties facing ECOWAS’s goal of promoting the free movement of goods and regional agricultural trade. While both Nigeria and Ghana are members of the regional bloc, traders continue to face disputes over market access, local trading arrangements, border procedures and the treatment of foreign businesses.
