Over 20 Feared Dead as Passenger Boat Capsizes on Cameroonian Waters
More than 20 people are feared to have lost their lives after a passenger boat travelling from northern Cameroon to Adamawa State in Nigeria overturned during a night journey. The incident occurred when the vessel, reportedly carrying over 50 passengers along with construction materials, was caught in severe weather conditions and capsized en route to its destination.
Reports indicate that the boat departed from Garoua and was heading towards Yola when it encountered a powerful storm late at night. Despite warnings from residents about the deteriorating weather, the operators proceeded with the trip, a decision believed to have contributed to the disaster.
Rescue sources said the accident happened along the Nigeria-Cameroon border corridor, with early estimates suggesting a significant number of casualties. By the following day, several bodies had been recovered and buried in nearby communities, while search operations continued for those still missing. Survivors who were pulled from the water have been taken to medical facilities in border areas for treatment.
Emergency responders from both Nigeria and Cameroon have been involved in ongoing rescue and recovery efforts. Authorities are yet to release a comprehensive official statement, but investigations are expected to commence to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
