President Zelensky Replaces Army Chief Amid Political Tensions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has removed Oleksandr Syrskyi from his position as commander-in-chief of the armed forces, appointing Mykhailo Drapatyi as his successor. The decision follows a period of political tension that also saw the recent dismissal of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, a move that triggered several days of protests across the country.
Reports indicate that disagreements between Syrskyi and Fedorov contributed to the leadership changes, with public pressure mounting on the government to restructure the military command. Syrskyi, who had been credited with key defensive operations, including the protection of Kyiv in the early stages of the conflict with Russia, stated that the armed forces had transitioned from a defensive posture to a more proactive phase.
Drapatyi, widely regarded as an experienced and frontline-tested officer, assumes command with expectations of advancing military reforms and improving operational effectiveness. He has pledged to focus on strengthening the armed forces while acknowledging the contributions of his predecessor.
Zelensky, in addressing the development, expressed appreciation for Syrskyi’s service and confirmed that further decisions regarding the country’s defence leadership would be formalised. The president also indicated that discussions were ongoing with Fedorov regarding a possible new role within government.
The leadership reshuffle comes at a critical time for Ukraine, as authorities seek to stabilise internal dynamics while continuing military operations and implementing reforms aimed at enhancing defence strategy, logistics, and technological capabilities.
