President Tinubu Extends Tenures of Immigration, Correctional Service Chiefs to 2028
President Bola Tinubu has extended the tenures of the heads of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) by 18 months, keeping both officials in office until 2028. The decision affects Immigration Comptroller-General Kemi Nandap, whose tenure now runs until June 30, 2028, and Correctional Service Controller-General Sylvester Nwakuche, who will remain in office until May 26 of the same year.

The Presidency said the extensions followed a recommendation by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, to prevent a leadership vacuum and allow the boards of the two agencies sufficient time to select successors. The decision provides additional time to manage the transition in two services responsible for border management, migration control, prison administration and the custody and rehabilitation of inmates.
Tinubu commended both service chiefs for reforms undertaken during their leadership and urged them to sustain the progress recorded. According to a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the extensions were intended to support continuity in the administration of the agencies while preparations for new leadership are made.
Nandap was nominated to lead the Nigeria Immigration Service in February 2024 and confirmed by the Senate the following month. Nwakuche was nominated to head the Nigerian Correctional Service in December 2024, with his appointment confirmed by the Senate in March 2025. Their extended tenures will keep both officials in charge beyond their original timelines, giving the relevant authorities more time to complete the succession process.
