South Korea, Africa Agree to Establish AI Hub
South Korea and the African Development Bank have agreed to establish a Korea-Africa AI Hub aimed at expanding artificial intelligence cooperation and supporting Africa’s digital transformation.
The agreement was reached during the 2026 Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation Ministerial Conference in Seoul, where AI and digital technology featured prominently in discussions on Africa’s economic development.
Under a letter of intent signed by the two sides, an AI hub linked to the African Development Bank will connect South Korea’s artificial intelligence capabilities with the bank’s network across Africa.
The initiative is expected to support AI talent development, capacity building and training, particularly for Africa’s young population, while creating opportunities for cooperation in technology and innovation.
South Korea has increasingly positioned itself as a technology partner for Africa, with the 2026 cooperation agenda focusing on artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, ICT, energy, manufacturing and innovation.
The AI hub is expected to provide a platform for sharing technology and expertise while helping African countries develop home-grown digital solutions and strengthen their participation in the global AI economy.
The agreement comes as African governments increasingly look to artificial intelligence to improve sectors including healthcare, education, agriculture and public services, while also addressing challenges around skills, infrastructure and access to computing resources.
For South Korea, the partnership offers an opportunity to deepen its economic and technological engagement with a continent of more than 1.4 billion people and a rapidly expanding digital economy.
