Super Falcons’ 35-Year World Cup Streak Ends After South Africa Defeat
Nigeria’s historic run of appearing at every FIFA Women’s World Cup has come to an end after the Super Falcons suffered a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the decisive CAF playoff in Casablanca.
The loss means Nigeria will miss the global tournament for the first time since the competition began in 1991. The Super Falcons had been given another opportunity to keep their qualification hopes alive after their quarter-final defeat to Cameroon at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, but South Africa ended that final route to Brazil 2027.
South Africa broke the deadlock in the 56th minute when Thembi Kgatlana finished a quick counterattack, before a second-half scramble produced another goal for Banyana Banyana after the ball took a deflection off Nigerian substitute Christy Ucheibe. Nigeria pulled one back in stoppage time when Ucheibe converted a penalty awarded after VAR review, but South Africa held on.
The result leaves South Africa and Ghana as Africa’s representatives in the inter-confederation playoff, where they will compete alongside teams from other confederations for the remaining three World Cup places. Ghana secured its spot after overturning an early deficit to beat Côte d’Ivoire 2-1, keeping alive its hopes of returning to the Women’s World Cup for the first time since 2007.
