Veteran Nollywood Actor Olu Jacobs Dies at 84
Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
His death was announced by his family on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. His wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, and their son, Olusoji Jacobs, shared the announcement on social media.
The family described Jacobs as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle, referring to him as “The Lion of Lufodo.” They also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect the family’s privacy as they mourn.
Jacobs, who was born on July 11, 1942, built a career spanning theatre, television and film. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London before appearing in British television productions and international films, and later becoming one of the prominent figures in Nigeria’s film industry.
His decades-long career included more than 100 film appearances and numerous awards and honours. He received the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) national honour in 2011 and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2016.
Jacobs’ death comes after years of false reports about his passing circulated online, with his family repeatedly debunking the claims. His latest death, however, has been confirmed by his family.
Tributes are expected to continue across Nigeria’s entertainment industry as colleagues and admirers mourn one of the country’s most recognised actors.
