Xpeng Targets 2027 Launch for Commercial ‘Flying’ Cars

Chinese electric vehicle maker Xpeng says it expects to begin delivering its much-anticipated “flying cars” in 2027, marking a major step toward commercial urban air mobility.

Xpeng Targets 2027 Launch for Commercial ‘Flying’ Cars

Company executives disclosed that large-scale production is being prepared ahead of the rollout, with 2027 described as a critical year for global deployment and testing.

The vehicles, developed by Xpeng’s aviation unit, are designed as hybrid systems combining road vehicles with deployable electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, enabling users to switch from driving to flying.

Xpeng has already received more than 7,000 pre-orders, mostly within China, as it works to secure regulatory approvals from aviation authorities before full commercial release.

The company says initial production volumes will likely range from hundreds to thousands of units, with plans to expand globally through partnerships and overseas markets in the coming years.

Analysts note that while the technology is advancing rapidly, widespread adoption will depend heavily on airspace regulation, safety certification, and infrastructure—factors that remain significant hurdles for the emerging flying car industry.

The move places Xpeng among a growing group of firms racing to commercialize aerial mobility, signaling a potential shift in how transportation could evolve beyond traditional road networks.
