Another 105 Nigerians Repatriated From South Africa Amid Xenophobic Attacks

Another 105 Nigerians have arrived in Lagos from South Africa, bringing to 1,926 the number repatriated since June amid ongoing xenophobic attacks, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The latest returnees comprised 26 men, 29 women and 50 children, according to ministry spokesperson Oluwafemi Adeniyi. The flight was the 14th consular evacuation from South Africa since the voluntary repatriation programme began on June 10.

The evacuation programme remains ongoing, with additional Nigerians undergoing verification and clearance in South Africa before future flights. The government has also continued discussions with South African authorities over measures to address xenophobic violence.

Abuja is urging Nigerians who remain in South Africa to remain vigilant, comply with local laws and maintain contact with Nigeria’s diplomatic mission in Pretoria for consular assistance.

The growing number of returnees raises questions about the safety of Nigerians in South Africa and whether diplomatic efforts can address the conditions driving the continued repatriations.
