Côte d’Ivoire Announces Major Gold Discovery Near Boundiali
Côte d’Ivoire has announced the discovery of a major gold deposit estimated at about 115 tonnes in the country’s northern Boundiali region, with Australian mining company Aurum Resources Limited planning to develop the site into a new mine.

The discovery was presented to Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé on Thursday, October 8, by company executives following approximately two years of exploration and drilling in the Boundiali and Kouto areas.
Aurum Resources chief executive Caigen Wang said the exploration had identified substantial gold resources, with further drilling expected to establish the deposit’s full potential. The company has indicated that construction could begin before the end of 2026, with initial gold production targeted for the first half of 2028.
The project is expected to require an investment of approximately $503 million. Government officials say the development could generate thousands of jobs during construction and create additional employment once commercial operations begin.
The discovery comes as Côte d’Ivoire seeks to expand its mining industry and reduce its reliance on traditional economic sectors. The country has attracted increasing investment in gold exploration and production, positioning the mineral as an important contributor to exports, government revenue and regional development.
However, the anticipated economic benefits will depend on the project securing the necessary approvals, completing construction and reaching commercial production. Authorities have also emphasised the importance of ensuring that major mining investments deliver lasting benefits to surrounding communities beyond the life of the mine.
For residents of northern Côte d’Ivoire, the project could bring new employment and infrastructure opportunities. Its longer-term impact will depend on how effectively the government and the company manage local participation, environmental protection and the distribution of mining revenues.
