New Airport Ride-Hailing System Could Have Travellers Paying Considerably More

ABUJA Nigeria – Travellers are raising concerns over a new ride-hailing system introduced by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), with some alleging that the new arrangement could significantly increase the cost of airport trips.
One traveller, known as Authentic Travelling on Instagram, shared his experience online after he said an airport attendant told him a ride to his destination would cost ₦30,000 — considerably more than the ₦6,000 to ₦8,000 he said he would normally pay.
The video has since sparked reactions online, with critics accusing the government of being insensitive to the economic pressures facing Nigerians.
Some have also alleged that restricting the number of ride-hailing services operating at airports could give airport transport operators greater control over fares and potentially create a monopoly.
The controversy follows earlier reports that FAAN had banned ride-hailing services including Uber, Bolt and inDrive from operating at airports.
But last Thursday, FAAN denied that it had banned the services, saying its discussions with transport operators were aimed at improving passenger safety, security, accountability and coordination of airport transportation — rather than preventing travellers from using their preferred ride-hailing platforms.
