Nigeria Thrash Egypt to Advance to WAFCON Quarter-Finals
Nigeria’s Super Falcons secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a commanding 6–2 victory over Egypt in their final Group C match.
The win ensured Nigeria finished level on six points with Zambia and Malawi, with qualification ultimately decided by the Confederation of African Football’s tie-breaking criteria. The result marked a strong recovery for the nine-time champions, who had lost their opening game before bouncing back in subsequent matches.
Nigeria opened the scoring in the first half through Asisat Oshoala, who converted a penalty after a video review. Gift Monday extended the lead just before the break, although Egypt responded with a penalty of their own to reduce the deficit before halftime.
The Super Falcons took firm control in the second half, with Uchenna Kanu adding a third goal after capitalizing on a defensive lapse. Christy Ucheibe later converted another penalty to widen the gap, while Egypt briefly threatened a comeback with a second goal.
However, Nigeria maintained their attacking momentum, as captain Rasheedat Ajibade converted a late penalty and assisted a sixth goal in stoppage time to complete the rout.
In the other Group C fixture, Zambia edged Malawi, leaving all three teams tied on points and making goal differences and other criteria decisive in determining the standings.
Nigeria will now progress to the knockout stage, where they are set to face the winners of Group D as they continue their pursuit of another continental title.
