Nigerian Duo Shatters National Records at US SEC Championships

Nigerian athletes Samuel Ogazi and Rhoda Adisa have delivered record-breaking performances at the SEC Championships in the United States, setting new national marks in the men’s 400m and women’s 800m events.

Ogazi produced a standout run in the men’s 400m final, finishing in 43.95 seconds to successfully retain his SEC outdoor title. The performance makes him the first Nigerian athlete to run under 44 seconds in the event, further improving his own national record set earlier this season.

He had previously clocked 44.02 seconds in Georgia, breaking a long-standing national record that had stood since 1987.

In the women’s 800m, Adisa also made history with a national record time of 2:01.56, surpassing the previous benchmark of 2:01.89.

Her performance reflects a sharp rise in form, having entered the season with a personal best of 2:06.21 before making significant improvements within a short period.

Both athletes’ achievements highlight the growing presence and competitiveness of Nigerian athletes in the United States collegiate athletics system, which continues to serve as a strong platform for global excellence.
