Oyo Teachers Begin Indefinite Strike Over School Kidnappings in Oriire
Teachers in Oyo State have begun an indefinite strike following the abduction of students and their colleagues in Oriire Local Government Area.

The action was directed by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), which ordered all public primary and secondary school teachers in the state to withdraw their services from June 1, 2026, until the kidnapped victims are safely released.
The strike stems from a May 15 attack on multiple schools in Oriire, where gunmen abducted dozens of pupils and teachers, with some casualties reported.
Union leaders said the decision followed prolonged captivity of the victims and what they described as insufficient progress in rescue efforts, warning that schools cannot operate under unsafe conditions.
The development has intensified concerns over rising insecurity in parts of the South-West, as authorities continue efforts to secure the release of those still held captive.
