Egypt Accuse FIFA of Bias After Controversial Argentina Victory at World Cup 2026
Egypt’s national team has accused FIFA of bias following a controversial 3–2 defeat to Argentina national football team in the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup.

Egypt’s head coach, Hossam Hassan, criticised the officiating after his side surrendered a two-goal lead late in the match, alleging that key refereeing and VAR decisions went against his team. He said Egypt were denied a clear penalty and had a legitimate goal ruled out after a VAR review.
The coach described the outcome as unjust and questioned the integrity of the decision-making process, warning that such incidents risk damaging confidence in the tournament.
Egypt forward Mostafa Mohamed also expressed frustration, suggesting the result reflected deeper issues with officiating standards. The match saw multiple VAR interventions, which have become the focal point of criticism from Egyptian officials and supporters.
Despite the allegations, there is no verified evidence to support claims of match-fixing or manipulation. FIFA has yet to issue an official response to Egypt’s complaints but has consistently maintained that refereeing decisions are reviewed in line with established protocols.
The controversy has reignited debate over the consistency of VAR usage in major international competitions, particularly in high-stakes knockout fixtures. Analysts warn that perceived inconsistencies could undermine trust in officiating systems if not addressed transparently.
Argentina’s win secures their place in the quarter-finals, while Egypt exit the tournament amid renewed scrutiny of refereeing standards and governance in global football.
