Five Nigerians Return to Abuja After Release from Detention in Côte d’Ivoire
Five Nigerian nationals have arrived in Abuja following their release from detention in Côte d’Ivoire, after intervention by the Federal Government.

The individuals were received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, along with other senior government officials.
According to official accounts, the group had travelled to Abidjan in 2025 for commercial activities but were later arrested and held for several months without formal charges. Nigerian authorities were reportedly unaware of their situation until early 2026, after which diplomatic efforts were initiated through the Nigerian Embassy.
Sustained engagement with Ivorian authorities eventually led to their release. However, one of the detainees died shortly afterward due to health complications linked to conditions experienced during detention. He was laid to rest in Côte d’Ivoire following consultations with his family.
Government officials indicated that communication challenges contributed to the prolonged detention, as the individuals were unable to effectively navigate the legal system in a French-speaking environment.
The case has drawn attention to the risks associated with informal cross-border travel and the vulnerability of citizens in unfamiliar jurisdictions. Authorities stated that further discussions with Côte d’Ivoire are expected regarding the circumstances of the detention.
The returnees have received initial support from government agencies, while arrangements are being considered to assist their reintegration. Officials also called for rehabilitation measures to help them rebuild their lives after the experience.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad and advised citizens to exercise caution when travelling, particularly without adequate preparation or understanding of local conditions.
