South African Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Raping His Biological Mother
A 22-year-old man in South Africa has been sentenced to 20 years’ direct imprisonment for raping his biological mother at their home in Carnarvon, Northern Cape.
The Carnarvon Regional Court handed down the sentence after the man pleaded guilty to rape following DNA evidence linking him to the offence. He was also ordered to be placed on South Africa’s National Register for Sex Offenders.
The incident occurred on November 23, 2025, when the 42-year-old woman and her partner had fallen asleep after drinking alcohol. The accused, who had also been drinking at a friend’s house, later returned home and found them asleep.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority, he undressed his mother and sexually assaulted her while she was asleep. She woke during the assault and discovered that her attacker was her son. He fled after she confronted him, and the incident was subsequently reported to police.
The accused initially denied the allegations after his arrest. However, DNA evidence linked him to the crime, and he eventually pleaded guilty when confronted with the evidence presented by the prosecution.
In a victim-impact statement, the woman said she had raised her son as a single parent and described feeling deeply hurt and betrayed by his actions. She told the court that she continues to receive counselling and suffers ongoing trauma, including difficulty sleeping.
The prosecution argued that the offender had deliberately exploited his mother’s vulnerability and violated not only her dignity and bodily integrity but also the fundamental trust between a parent and child. The court considered his guilty plea as a mitigating factor but determined that the seriousness of the offence warranted a lengthy prison sentence.
The NPA welcomed the sentence, saying it reflected the seriousness with which sexual offences are treated by South Africa’s criminal justice system. The man has also been declared unfit to possess a firearm.
